          Tracking Santa's Journey 12/17/2009

NORAD tracks Santa's Christmas Eve flight every year. Here's the  cute story behind it. Google posted an ad about this on their maps page. Just another reason to appreciate Google.

          Sleeping Better 12/16/2009

I have found an excellent online resource for better sleep tips and discussion, SleepWarrior.com. I'm currently going through Jeff's 40 "Sleep Hacks" and am getting to work on some of them.

Moreover, what Jeff has done with this website is admirable: he's researched a really important topic, experimented personally, then synthesized his knowledge and experience into a format that is easy for others to learn from. He's an example of how ordinary people can give back to the wider community. I like it.

          On the Subway Tracks 12/12/2009

So this man hops into in the dirty pit, picks something up, steps on the rail, and spryly climbs back up onto the platform. I appreciate his sense of haste, though there is no indication of a train anywhere near. He has picked up some kind of necklace. He looks at it for a bit and then tosses it disdainfully back into a pool of water.

          The Sound of Silence 12/06/2009

I was listening to Ravi Shankar on Rhapsody the other day while stretching on the floor. One track ended and there was a short pause. I stopped my stretch and waited. And suddenly I worried that the music had stopped entirely. Sure enough, my computer screen read, "We're sorry. An unexpected error ocurred." It was a striking reminder of something I already knew: the silence while waiting for music to begin, or resume, is tremendously powerful.
